Superbowl Sunday Cyber Sew-In

Since this is a one afternoon (or thereabouts) event, let's scale down a bit from the New Year's activity.

The poll is running toward designating what would be door prizes as "Cyber Treats", and we have several already committed from last time.

To earn a chance for a Cyber Treat--one chance each category--six chances maximum:

1. Post a recipe for a Super Bowl Sunday munchy. Posted in advance is good so we can provide for the football viewers and get into the sewing room. Everything else can wait till Sunday. (DH estimates that football will be on TV from pregame to postgame from about 10:00 a.m. till 7 p.m.  Pacific Time. I'd say that gives us the whole day to sew!!)
2. Show and Tell in the photo albums.
3. Something for charity. A block or more for AHQ or a charity of your choice.
4. Share a tip, website, or project idea.
5. Finish or make substantial progress on a UFO. We all have them and you know it.
6. Participate in the Mystery.

Since Super Bowl Sunday precedes Valentine's Day by a week this year, the Mystery will be a Valentine's project. Gather up pinks and whites and reds for the project. It's a small one, so you won't need a lot. Scrappy will be fine. I'll edit to give a rough estimate of how much yardage when I figure it out.

Oops--so much for the estimate. I forgot. It should take no more that half a yard each of pinks and reds and possibly a yard of background--all can be from mixed scraps.

New edit--Keep the conversation going on the list when you take sewing breaks. Question to ponder: What would you do if you won the Vegemite?

Report your chances by Monday 8:00 pm PST using the subject line "Cyber Sew-In Report" so I don't have to search for them.

Enchiladas

I worked all day, but, I'm home now. Just put enchiladas in the oven...we make them usually with chicken or beef...plan to try shrimp when the children move away..

Here's my recipe...

Enchiladas

¼ cup chopped onion
2 Tbs butter
3 oz package of cream cheese (softened)
1 Tbs milk
½ tsp salt
¼ tsp ground cumin
2 Cups meat (your choice, we've done them all.)
6 tortillas (eight inch.)
1 can cream of chicken soup
1 eight oz carton sour cream
1 cup milk
1 can green chilies (jalapenos for a spicier dish.)
1 cup shredded Monterey jack cheese (but you can use any cheese you like.)

In a skillet cook onions with butter until tender, in a bowl combine cream cheese, 1 Tbs milk, salt, cumin, and cooked onion and meat. Combine well.

Spoon 1/3 cup of mixture onto each tortilla and roll and place seam-side down in a baking dish.

In a bowl combine cream of chicken soup, sour cream, one cup of milk, chilies or peppers, mix well, pour evenly over tortillas. Cover with foil, bake at 350 for 35 minutes or until heated through. Remove foil, add cheese, cook an additional four to five minutes or until cheese is melted.

(And that's it … enjoy.)

I plan to sew tihs evening, but, had to start diner first.

Super Bowl/Valentine Mystery--border

I think that just adding a narrow red border and then another background border to the runner would make a great ending.

<>

But what do you think of this?

If you want to make those three inch hearts for the border, they are pretty easy.

Sew together 1½ inch strips of two reds, two pinks, a pink and a background, and a red and a background and cut them into 1½ inch sections. Put those sections into four patches as shown, then add the triangles to each side. The triangles are cut from 2 3/8 inch squares. Space the blocks with 3 by 6 inch rectangles, with a square at each end. I cannot display the pointed end with my EQ software. (Maybe someone knows how I could do that.)

I have not done this yet--the photo from the last post is how far I got before I had to plan a class for middle schoolers. You know I can't go unprepared into that battle.

So you decide on your border plan,

Super Bowl/Valentine Mystery Step 6

By now you know that you have six heart blocks.
What are you going to do with them?

You may want to take them and put them into a Valentine's snuggle quilt.

Or make a pair of three heart wall hangings?

The Mystery plan goes like this.

I cut 1½ inch strips of background fabric and stitched one to the top of all but one of my hearts. I then assembled the six hearts into a table runner like this, and added a background sashing strip on each side. (Ignore those mitered corners. I should have redone this image without them.)
Cut an 8 inch square of background, and cut it diagonally into two half square triangles. I then folded them in half and pressed so as to have a guide line for the center. I added these triangles to the ends.

My design wall is not large enough to stretch the whole thing out to get a picture, so here it is folded over to get the idea.
Think about how you would border this and finish it. I'll share some more later this evening. I'll try to schedule it, but the last one I scheduled didn't post, so it may not be up till I get home from the church--I have a class to teach.

Super Bowl/Valentine Mystery Step 5

Stack your sets and assemble six hearts.

Super Bowl/Valentines Cyber Mystery Step 4

Make flying geese of the remaining half square triangle units. There should be six pink sets and six red.

Pair off those first step pieces with a plain square of the opposite color. Half of each with pieced piece on the left, half on the right.

Join them into squares as shown.

Here's my recipe. Campbells never lets me down.

(Yea, Becka. It's good to hear from you!!!!)

I like to to use fresh salsa. Down here it is in great supply and I also have learned how to make it. I also use different color tortillas to make it fun. The blue ones are always neat

1 package (8 ounces) cream cheese, softened
4 ounces shredded Cheddar cheese (about 1 cup)
1 cup Pace® Chunky Salsa

Tortilla chips

1.Spread the cream cheese in a 9-inch microwaveable pie plate. Sprinkle with the Cheddar cheese.

2.Microwave on HIGH for 2 minutes or until the Cheddar cheese is melted. Top with the salsa. Serve with the tortilla chips.

Super Bowl/Valentine's Mystery Step 3

Assemble three half square triangles with one background square as shown. You will make six each with the pink dominant and six with the red.

If you have opted to skip the first pieced step, the single square will be placed instead of the red/pink half square triangle unit.

Ooo! Do yours need squaring off as badly as mine do?

SuperBowl/Valentine's Mystery Step 2

Use your favorite half square triangle method to make these units from a variety of your red, pink, and background fabrics. Since they are 2½ inch squares, the initial measurement for the squares to make the triangles is 2 7/8. If you are not comfortable with your accuracy at that size, cut the squares a bit larger and trim to square after stitching.

Again, I recommend that you press all seams open. You will find out why later.

This auto-rotate glitch is annoying. Sorry--again they are sideways.

If you have chosen to skip the detail work of step one, then you do not need the 12 red/pink units.

What would I do with the Vegemite?

I would feed it to my hubby. He ate in when he was in Australia for his two year mission for our church. He said it wasn't that bad.

If I won the Vegemite, I'd hide it in some amazing recipe like 'The Secret Chef' and watch as my family ate it unknowingly.. brewhahaha

Super Bowl Recipe--Fake Arby's

My Super recipe is:

Fake "Arby's" - Ham & Cheese

a package of Buns (hoagie, hanburger, or hotdog)
Slivered, sliced package of Ham (Buddig)
slices of Cheese

Put together the meat and Cheese on the bun, Micro for 1 minute.

add BBQ sauce of your choice.

I found some KC materpiece that taste really good on these. They taste even better than the real Arby's Ham & cheese. I know cause I tried them on their $1 menu tonight... Not as good as mine!

Super Bowl/Valentine's Mystery Step One.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Here are some pictures and a few words.

And I can also see that I left off some words. Where it says press, it should probably read trim and press. It will be helpful later in the process if you press your seams open instead of to one side.

These units are 2½ inches unfinished and are made scrappy from your various red and pink scraps. The large squares are 2½ inches and the smaller square to make the triangle corners are 1½ inch.

Sorry they're sideways. Silly camera.

While you are cutting the 2½ inch squares, cut an additonal six each of pink and red, and twelve of background fabrics.

Okay--have I confused you yet?
To sum up:   (2½ inches unfinished)
Six of these units with red squares and pink corners
Six with pink squares and red corners
Six plain squares each of read, pink, and 12 of background.

If you want to skip the piecing in this step, you can replace these and some piece units from the next step with plaing squares. In that case you will need a total of  18 each red and pink squares at 2½ inches and 12 of background.

Cheese and Vegemite Scrolls

Ingredients
4 sheets puff pastry, thawed
1/4 cup Vegemite
3 cups grated tasty cheese
1 egg, beaten

Method

Preheat oven to 220°C. (425ยบ F.) Line 3 baking trays with baking paper. Place pastry, 1 sheet at a time, onto a chopping board. Spread Vegemite over pastry. Sprinkle cheese over Vegemite.

Starting from the edge nearest you, roll up pastry, 1 sheet at a time. Be careful not to roll the pastry sheets too tight.

Cut each roll into 12 equal portions. An easy way to do this is to cut each roll into quarters, then cut each quarter in 3. Brush pastry scroll tops with beaten egg.

Place scrolls, cut-side up, onto baking trays, allowing room for spreading. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes or until pastry is golden and cheese is melted. Allow to cool for 5 minutes on trays before transferring to a wire rack. Serve
