I think that just adding a narrow red border and then another background border to the runner would make a great ending.

If you want to make those three inch hearts for the border, they are pretty easy.

Sew together 1½ inch strips of two reds, two pinks, a pink and a background, and a red and a background and cut them into 1½ inch sections. Put those sections into four patches as shown, then add the triangles to each side. The triangles are cut from 2 3/8 inch squares. Space the blocks with 3 by 6 inch rectangles, with a square at each end. I cannot display the pointed end with my EQ software. (Maybe someone knows how I could do that.)

I have not done this yet--the photo from the last post is how far I got before I had to plan a class for middle schoolers. You know I can't go unprepared into that battle.

By now you know that you have six heart blocks.
What are you going to do with them?

You may want to take them and put them into a Valentine's snuggle quilt.

The Mystery plan goes like this.
 
I cut 1½ inch strips of background fabric and stitched one to the top of all but one of my hearts. I then assembled the six hearts into a table runner like this, and added a background sashing strip on each side. (Ignore those mitered corners. I should have redone this image without them.)

Cut an 8 inch square of background, and cut it diagonally into two half square triangles. I then folded them in half and pressed so as to have a guide line for the center. I added these triangles to the ends.
 
My design wall is not large enough to stretch the whole thing out to get a picture, so here it is folded over to get the idea. 

Think about how you would border this and finish it. I'll share some more later this evening. I'll try to schedule it, but the last one I scheduled didn't post, so it may not be up till I get home from the church--I have a class to teach.

Stack your sets and assemble six hearts.

Make flying geese of the remaining half square triangle units. There should be six pink sets and six red.

Pair off those first step pieces with a plain square of the opposite color. Half of each with pieced piece on the left, half on the right.

Join them into squares as shown.

Assemble three half square triangles with one background square as shown. You will make six each with the pink dominant and six with the red.

If you have opted to skip the first pieced step, the single square will be placed instead of the red/pink half square triangle unit.

Ooo! Do yours need squaring off as badly as mine do?

Use your favorite half square triangle method to make these units from a variety of your red, pink, and background fabrics. Since they are 2½ inch squares, the initial measurement for the squares to make the triangles is 2 7/8. If you are not comfortable with your accuracy at that size, cut the squares a bit larger and trim to square after stitching.

Again, I recommend that you press all seams open. You will find out why later.

If you have chosen to skip the detail work of step one, then you do not need the 12 red/pink units.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Here are some pictures and a few words.

And I can also see that I left off some words. Where it says press, it should probably read trim and press. It will be helpful later in the process if you press your seams open instead of to one side.

These units are 2½ inches unfinished and are made scrappy from your various red and pink scraps. The large squares are 2½ inches and the smaller square to make the triangle corners are 1½ inch.

While you are cutting the 2½ inch squares, cut an additonal six each of pink and red, and twelve of background fabrics.

Okay--have I confused you yet?
To sum up:   (2½ inches unfinished)
Six of these units with red squares and pink corners
Six with pink squares and red corners
Six plain squares each of read, pink, and 12 of background.

If you want to skip the piecing in this step, you can replace these and some piece units from the next step with plaing squares. In that case you will need a total of  18 each red and pink squares at 2½ inches and 12 of background.
