Here's a Superbowl Weekend Challenge

It's a simple block. Six inch finished size (6½ inches unfinished).







If we can collect 80 of them it will make this quilt for one of our American Heroes.

If eighty people make one block each...

If forty people make two blocks each...

If twenty-five make three blocks...

Once again, this simple block provides a bonus of four half square triangle units.

Here is how:

Use any two fabrics of red, white, or blue, or RWB print.


Cut a 6½ inch square of one fabric, and four 3½ inch squares of another.



Place one of the smaller squares at the corner of the large square. Stitch across from corner to corner as shown. Make another line of stitching approximately one half inch from the original toward the corner. Cut the pieces apart between the two lines of stitching.

Set the half square triangle unit aside.

Press the corner triangle to form the square.

Continue to do the same for each corner of the square.

I will collect the blocks.  Kathy Nannery will collect the bonus bits to use for a second quilt.

Here is the bonus block.


Square off the HSTs to 2½ inches and assemble them into 4½ inch square-in-squares.

Put two such squares together with an 8½ by 4½ inch (cut size) rectangle of red or blue.

So where does this go? It can go into a staircase:

or a strippy layout.

If you want to make a whole top of these, great! If you make one or a few, they can be used in a collective quilt for the troops. Let Julie know by 5 p.m. on Sunday. When we know what blocks are coming, we will let you know who to send them to for assembly.
